The funds were budgeted as follows: $2000 for speakers; $250 for supplies; and $250 for program refreshments. The general topics for the programs were suggested primarily by LiveWires participants.

LiveWires continues to be the centerpiece program for older adults in our Library. We are grateful to NMRLS for allowing us to be a recipient of the Center for Excellence funding in order to continue, and expand upon, this program. Because of the funding, we have been able to offer several workshops, specifically geared to the topic of aging. The first, Living on Purpose in the Second Half of Live was a three-hour workshop led by Roberta Taylor, a psychotherapist and certified life coach specializing in older adults. This workshop used self-discovery exercises, present goal-setting tools and practical resources to help participants focus on what is important in their lives. Because of the positive response to this workshop, and because of a request of several of the participants, we asked Roberta Taylor to design another workshop on the topic of legacy. This second, two and one half hour experiential workshop was Living Your Legacy which looked at some of the ways people might share stories and enliven their lives by creating today what they want to be remembered for tomorrow.

Having been able to offer these two workshops, in addition to our other programming, allowed the Reading Public Library to demonstrate to our constituents the commitment we have to continuing and expanding upon our services to active older adults.

The LiveWires program will continue for another year due to the generosity of the Friends of the Reading Public Library. In addition, I have applied to the Reading Lions Club for funding for the LiveWires program.

Hamilton-Wenham Center of Excellence Report

<span style="font-style: italic; This program followed a field trip that 25 adults made to the Orchard House for a tour. In addition, the Friends of the Library purchased a pass to the Orchard House so that patrons could visit this historic site.

In September, we put together a Self-Published Authors Fair and invited authors from all over Massachusetts. We had 25 authors attend with 80-100 patrons coming by to meet the authors, buy books and have them signed. In the evening, we invited Rita Schiano, as our keynote speaker. She wrote Painting the Invisible Man and Sweet Bitter Love. The awards are administered by Civic Ventures, a think tank devoted to baby boomers, work, and social purpose, and are funded by the MetLife Foundation.

Examples of encore career programs include a program that recruits people over age 50 and matches them with flexible schedule jobs in social service and government agencies; a hospital that creates patient counselor jobs and offers seasonal-work positions with full-year benefits to recruit and retain experienced nurses; a school district that pays stipends to experienced adults tutoring students in math and science; and a nonprofit that advances its mission by adding new part-time jobs that attract older adults seeking meaningful, flexible work.

The award does not apply to volunteer work done without any type of compensation. "Compensation," however, is broadly viewed and can include things such as health insurance, stipends, living allowance, or other creative benefits. Organizations that engage individuals over age 50 solely as volunteers, without any form of compensation, are not eligible for the award.

Nominations are welcome from any individual who is familiar with the work/practices of the organization, including an employee or board member. Nominations may be submitted through June 1, 2009. Letters of Intent are requested by May 1, 2009, or as soon as possible after this date.

Visit the Encore Careers campaign Web site She has been living in Albuquerque for about three years and working there at the public library.

Nancy took part in the NMRLS Lifelong Access project and sends me information from time to time for the blog. Here's what she's sent:

"I wanted to mention a City of Albuquerque retired senior volunteer program here (RSVP) which does lots of good work throughout the community, and is part (I think) of the national Senior Corps. They have been active in the library and school systems here, using literacy and tutoring volunteers on a regular basis, for example, but also provide one-time services (e.g. creating online databases) for other non profits."

Although she'll miss the Southwest, Nancy will be leaving Albuquerque to return to Newburyport this spring.

Two Interesting Links from ALA

The impact of retired Boomers and civic engagement During a stint in prison for an armored car robbery, Richard Marinick earned two degrees from Boston University and turned his talents to writing.

Described by USA Today as “a cult classic", his writing is gritty and authentic. The author knows the mean streets of Southie and has paid the price. The Institute will train these Lifelong Fellows to lead the nation’s libraries in enhancing services for older adults with opportunities for active learning, creative exploration, and meaningful civic engagement.

The Institute will run from July 31 - August 4, 2006, at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. It is one component of a multi-year Lifelong Access Libraries initiative funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies, which is described in more detail on the Lifelong Access Libraries website www.lifelonglibraries.org. The Institute is being co-hosted by two entities at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill: The School of Information and Library Science, and the Institute on Aging.

More: http://www.lff.org/lifelong/documents/LifelongInstituteprFINAL71706.pdf

In Tempe (AZ), New Café in Public Library Serves as One-Stop Resource for Boomers Planning Next Chapters

As baby boomers redefine the traditional retirement years, experts predict they'll challenge the institutions set up to serve them to change too. The traditional "senior center" is one such institution that's likely to undergo big changes in approach, marketing, and services. After all, boomers may not flock to something called a "senior center," but they will still need a place to go to get the information, services, and networking opportunities they're looking for as they plan the next chapters of their lives.

In Arizona, a coalition known as Tempe Connections is breaking new ground – in more ways than one. This month, it's celebrating the grand opening of the Connections Café, a one-stop resource for boomers, built on the first floor of the Tempe public library. Those who visit can sip a latte while searching for paid or volunteer jobs that provide service to the community, visiting with a career coach, attending life planning workshops, finding out more about caring for aging parents, exploring adventure travel opportunities, signing up for classes, attending cultural events, and comparing notes with other boomers entering the same stage of life.
Read more: http://www.civicventures.org/nextchapter/stories_tempe_1.cfm

Baby Boomer Women: Secure Futures or Not?

Baby boomer women are in trouble. Unlike any other time in our nation’s history, unless there are dramatic policy shifts, in terms of absolute numbers, baby boomer women, most particularly minority women, will find their elder years to be a "never ending" struggle. After selflessly caring for their children and aging parents, a significant number of our country’s 40 million plus boomer women will not be able to afford to retire, will fall below the poverty line and experience financial insecurity and poorer health in their later years with limited aid from traditional safety nets.

See this Harvard Generations Policy Program and the Global Generations Policy Institute study.

What Will Your Library Have for This Patron?

Will you direct him to the Large Print books?

Can You Afford to Retire? The Institute will introduce participants to Lifelong Access, a new framework for working with active older adults that that promotes productive aging through learning and civic engagement. Lifelong Access is based on an understanding of older adults as resources for their communities and offers an alternative to the predominant deficit-based model of aging.

The Institute will focus on three primary areas: (1) concepts and research underlying new approaches to working with midlife and older adults; (2) promising practices in library services, including the Lifelong Access framework for new older adult services; and (3) leadership and skills in community librarianship.

The Institute is based on the principle of "action learning," in which the acquired skills and knowledge are put to practical use at libraries over a sustained period of time. Candidates and their library directors must be prepared to implement Lifelong Access in their own libraries, test and refine the model, help disseminate the model, train or mentor other adult services librarians, and participate in evaluation of the Institute. The Fellows will be linked electronically in a national community of practice based on information exchange and communications.

The Institute is part of the Lifelong Access Libraries initiative, funded by a major grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies. Institutes will be conducted in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Selection of Fellows

Fellows will be selected by a panel of national advisors and staff of Americans for Libraries Council. Applicants should be mid-career practicing librarians. They should include in their application packet a letter from their library director in support of their application and expressing a commitment to improve the library's services and resources for midlife and active older adults.
Applicants will be evaluated in part on the basis of:

* Evidence of success in the design and implementation of new programs and services;

* Experience in building collaborations and working successfully in partnerships with community organizations, groups, or agencies;

* Enthusiasm for becoming an active member of the Lifelong Access community of practice and a commitment to sharing experiences and insights through the online Lifelong Access network;

* Readiness to make presentations at library conferences and to contribute written materials to professional literature.

To Apply
The application is available online and must be accompanied by a letter of support from the library director. Selection will be on a competitive basis. The cost of Fellows' travel, tuition, and room and board for the Institute will be covered by ALC. A limited number of qualified candidates not selected as Fellows may participate at cost. Deadline for submitting an application is April 15. Please visit our website http://www.lff.org/programs/lifelong.html for further details.

About Lifelong Access Libraries(tm) and Americans for Libraries Council Lifelong Access Libraries(tm) is an initiative developed by Americans for Libraries Council to transform library services for active older adults making the transition to new forms of retirement. Unwilling to stuff envelopes or go off quietly to the sidelines, these change-makers are taking matters into their own hands and fashioning a new vision of the second half of life, one in which the expertise and talent of a lifetime is refocused on finding solutions to challenges in our communities, our country, and the world. See what three model libraries are doing to improve service to their active older adults: http://www.lff.org/documents/CentersforExcellenceandInnovation.pdf

The Boomers Are Coming!
Is your library ready to receive its share of the millions of near-retirement boomers searching for personal fulfillment, new learning, and other adventures? Hanging a sign for "seniors" won't work for this generation, who are more active and committed to continued work than traditional retirees. To help all libraries retool themselves for this new challenge and opportunity, ALC's Lifelong Access Libraries Initiative—funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies—is sharing and shaping resources and model programs.

This fall, ALC announced three Lifelong Access Centers for Excellence and Innovation, celebrating their creative work to redefine library services, collections, and spaces for active older adults. ALC congratulates:
- The New Haven (CT) Free Public Library
- The Phoenix (AZ) Public Library
- The Allegheny County (PA) Library System

"Becoming the Butterfly: A New Look at Retirement and Aging"

Chelmsford Public Library has a new film series beginning in February: http://www.chelmsfordlibrary.org/programs/programs/becoming_the_butterfly.html

For information contact Kathy Cryan-Hicks kcryanhic@mvlc.org

The Dallas Morning News, 12/11/2005

Ads Target Empty Nests, Full Wallets

Have you seen the Fidelity ad with Paul McCartney? It is/will be appearing over the next five years .... Tailored to baby boomers, better quality and slightly larger print than pbks, and cheaper (about $9.95 each) than trade pbks.

Nancy found this:

Upperbacks: now the Brits want them too

The new trend towards larger size paperbacks that's slowly taking over mass-market outfits here in the US is spreading across the pond, according to an article in Reuters UK. The first publisher on board is Headline, which will introduce the "upperback" mass market version of Faye Kellerman's STRAIGHT INTO DARKNESS in January:

"We think the new format looks different enough to be appealing," said Kerr MacRae, deputy managing editor at Headline, which is owned by French media group Lagardere. They're easier to read the way the text is reset."

Headline plans to keep the cover price of its bigger-format thrillers the same as it is on smaller ones. "The short answer on how we'll make it profitable is that we'll need to sell more of them," said MacRae, who this week is at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the publishing industry's largest annual event.

"It's marginal cost," he added, "and we think retailers are excited about it."

EqualAccess Libraries(tm) Application Materials Are on the Way!

From Beth Wade at MBLC:

The Mass Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) has partnered with Libraries for the Future (LFF) to institute the EqualAccess Libraries(tm) professional development program in Massachusetts.

EqualAccess is a three-year initiative, already successfully implemented in Arizona and Pennsylvania, whose purpose is to help public librarians assess, and in partnership with local organizations, address their community's most pressing needs. EqualAccess focuses on building librarians' community programming skills, expertise in youth, health, or lifelong programming, and ability to use technology to expand and enhance programs and services.

A cornerstone of the program is the four-day EqualAccess Libraries Institute, which provides libraries with the tools to become increasingly community-responsive centers of information and education.

The 2006 Massachusetts EqualAccess Libraries Institute will be held on March 13th, March 14th, April 25th, and May 31st at the Palmer Public Library in Palmer, MA. Participating libraries are encouraged to send two librarians to the Institute; smaller libraries with limited staff may send one librarian.

Each library will receive a $5000 EqualAccess Library grant as part of a special LSTA EqualAccess Library Initiative Program. Grantees will use funds to implement Youth, Lifelong, or Health Access programs. (The EqualAccess program is available for public libraries that have approved long range plans on file with the MBLC and are certified to receive State Aid to Public Libraries throughout the application and award process.)

Application materials will be sent to all public library directors in the state of MA and should arrive in the first week of January 2006; fifteen libraries will be chosen to participate in EqualAccess this year.

For more information about EqualAccess Libraries(tm), check out the EqualAccess website at <http://ea.webjunction.org/> , or contact the MA EqualAccess Program Manager: Eleanor Stafford @ Eleanor.Stafford@state.ma.us - or 1-800-952-7403, ext. 228.

White House Conference on Aging, Dec. 11-14

The White House Conference on Aging is underway in Washington, D.C. It was exciting to hear all the terrific things you are doing in your libraries to serve your active, older adult patrons! Gloria Coles and Carol Greenfield were very impressed with the work you’ve all done. Thanks to Nancy, Julie, Mary S., Kathy, and Lorraine for sharing the happenings in their libraries.

I just want to recap a few items from the meeting:

We will announce the web eXchange site to all members next month. Please continue to take a look at the information on the site and send comments on how we might improve it. http://www.nmrls.org/tlx/index.shtml Pass the link on to colleagues in your library.

Here are the resources that people agreed to take charge over: Kathy (Lifelong Learning), Nancy (Travel), Mary S. As you come across new information for these pages, please let me know. We’ll use email until I get the blog going. Thank you to all who volunteered to take a topic.

The group agreed on Thursday that a blog would be the best way to communicate news about services and programming in your libraries. Then, information that is more permanent will be added to the web site. The blog will be private, with only invited participants able to comment or post. I will be getting that going in October.

I'll be sending handouts to those who could not attend and requested information from the workshop. I’m in the process of writing the last progress report.

Remember that there will be an LSTA grant topic on Libraries for the Future’s Equal Access Libraries Program (http://www.lff.org/programs/), which includes the Lifelong Access Initiative.
